If you follow me on social media you might have seen me bombarding you with photos from our amazing road cycling holiday in southern Spain. In May we spent a week with with Brezo Cycling in Lubrin, about 70km outside of Almeria, to be exact.
It was, in short, quite possibly the best week of cycling I’ve ever had, or at least the best week with the roadie, anyway.
Daily guided rides on silky smooth traffic free roads; long, beautiful mountain category climbs that went on forever with scenery that took my breath away at every turn; great coffee and traditional Spanish food; and wonderful self catering / B&B accommodation with brilliant company. Perfection.
As ever I took the GoPro and have been working through the 100 million hours of video footage captured in this gorgeous road cycling paradise. For your viewing pleasure: the first video: from our Day Two ride, a 33 mile out and back route from Lubrin past Uleila del Campo and up to the Puerto de la Virgen climb – totalling 3,184ft of ascent.
It was our first taste of continental climbing – and by that I mean not the sort of mile-or-two-long, steep climbs we’re used to here in the UK or specifically the South Downs. Long, winding, gradual switchback mountain climbs that reward you with a rollercoaster of twists and turns on the descent…
I’ve since found out that at the summit of this climb on the road there’s a mountain bike track that goes right up to the Convent, averaging at 10% gradient and peaking at 20%. That’s more like the kind of climb me and Chris are used to here on the Downs so part of me wants to give that a go.
But the other part remembers that our South Downs kickers are only 20% for a few hundred metres, not kilometres like they are out in Spain.
One to think about if we head back to Lubrin with the mountain bikes for sure!
