Spring is finally here and let me tell you I couldn’t be more ready to crack out the sunnies and shorts and t shirts for my runs and rides again.
I’ve been lusting after the long days riding on dry, dusty trails and for the seafront to come alive again as the daylight seeps into the night.
There’s always such a buzz in Brighton at this time of year. The changing of the clocks brings with it the promise of endless playtime – more time to get outside with friends, to swim in the sea, to run after work, to join my fellow cycling club members for time trials or longer evening rides.
I just love it when the seasons change.
It feels like a real energy refresh – and a clearing of the fog that can sometimes hang over you during the winter months. I know that for me personally, longer, brighter days make such a difference to my wellbeing. I love cosying up at home when it’s wet and windy but it’s always much easier to be motivated when the sun is shining and it’s warm outside.
I’m not the only one who feels this way. Recent research from E.ON shows that 77% of Brits put off outdoor activities due to bad weather, and nearly a fifth say that miserable weather causes them to eat less healthily.
Think about how this March compares to last year with the winter that stayed far too late at the party… and that freak snow! If you look back I bet your energy levels now and then are two very different things!
If you need a little help refreshing your energy levels this spring, I’ve got some tips for you (and so has Alice Liveing).
Plan some new adventures
Nothing keeps you motivated like planning new experiences.
I’m so excited about the next few months. Me and Chris have booked out some holiday dates for some epic bike-shaped adventures alongside our usual cycling escapades doing things we’ve never done before.
The first one is taking the road bikes to Spain in May, which I’m SO excited about. We’re spending a week in Almeria on a trip with Brezo Cycling and I cannot wait to get out on those smooth, traffic-free mountain roads.
Before that, in just two weeks’ time in fact, we’re riding the inaugural BM Ride – the latest addition to the Brighton Marathon Weekend – a 50km closed-roads ride on the course before the runners start. I was meant to be doing the marathon again but I fell out of love with it after the half so decided to switch to the bike.
In June we’re going to the UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Champs in Fort William and then in August I’m finally riding my first century – got in on the RideLondon ballot again (didn’t do it in 2016 as I decided to throw myself off of my bike and break some bones instead).
That’s four brand new experiences to look forward to and there’ll be some racing in between, so lots of great reasons to keep the energy high and stay motivated.
What adventures are you planning this year?
Refresh your workout wardrobe
There’s a lot to be said for feeling confident in your kit. It’s a well-known fact* that a good pair of leggings makes you [squat/run/insert workout here] better. The best kind of kit is the one that fits so well you forget you’re wearing it, so you can just focus on the workout at hand.
That’s why I love (and live in) Sweaty Betty. Squat-proof leggings and flattering tees that make me feel badass in the gym or class, whatever I’m doing. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to find out how you can win your own…

Feel the gloriousness of the present moment
I went to my friends’ awesome event this week called Belongcon and this was one of the speaker’s tips for greater happiness. I think we can all relate to the fact that in this tech-heavy, always-on world, it’s hard to slow down and be fully present in what we’re doing.
But taking the time be more mindful is a great way to get an energy refresh. I always come out of a yoga class or meditation floating with calm, but buzzing with energy.
So I’m making a pledge to myself this year to not only to ride more, and get stronger in the gym, but to take the time to slow down, and give my energy levels a right old refresh in between all the high intensity stuff I do.
Fancy winning some kit to keep your energy levels high? Yeah you do…
